New Delhi, March 1: The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences (CIRBS), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has organized BIOPHYSIKA- 2024: National Conference on Recent Advancements in Biophysics and Structural Biology on February 28th, 2024. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Eqbal Hussain, Officiating Vice Chancellor, JMI. During his presidential speech Prof. Eqbal Hussain highlighted the contribution of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Science in the ranking of the university as evident from NIRF ranking and NAAC accreditation. He congratulated the science community on the Science Day and wished that more C.V. Raman may come out from Ramanujan Block, JMI where the Centre is situated.
The Centre felicitated its former Director, Prof. Faizan Ahmad, for his huge contribution in providing focussed approach to the Centre and encouraging faculty members to prioritise research that helped the Centre to become epitome of science at JMI.
Prof. Zahid Ashraf, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, highlighted that the Centre is performing extra ordinary and providing excellent results under the directorship of Professor Rajan Patel. Professor Rajan Patel thanked the vice chancellor for encouraging the activities of the Centre. The Centre was able to introduce a new program, B.Sc. (Life Sciences) with Computer Application, in the session, 2024-2025, only due to active support of JMI Vice Chancellor and the Registrar.
Prof. Patel informed that this conference is organised by the students of M.Sc. Biophysics, which is ninth in the continuation. Professor Md. Imtaiyaz Hassan delivered the vote of thanks.
Prof. Madan Rao, National Centre for Biological Sciences-TIFR Bangalore, president, Indian Biophysical Society, was the guest of honour. He highlighted the role of physics in life sciences, in general, and in biophysics, in particular.
The Conference was a grand event for young minds and budding scientists as eminent speakers and scientists from Pan-India, were present. Various scientists from Regional Centre for Biotechnology, Faridabad, National Centre for Cell Science, Pune, CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, University of Kashmir, Srinagar, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, Manipur University, Imphal, Central University of Rajasthan, Ajmer, enriched the conference with science, technology and cutting-edge research in the field of biophysics.
The conference was attended by more than 300 delegates from various parts of the country. More than 100 abstracts were published in the proceeding, which were presented as posters and oral talks in the afternoon. Various poster and oral talk awards were distributed in the valedictory session.
