New Delhi, September 18: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) observed ‘Swachhata Pakhwara’ from 1st to 15th September, 2024 and organized a number of activities during the fortnight to create awareness about cleanliness, hygiene and plastic free life within and outside the campus. The university is now observing ‘Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS)’ fortnight from September 17th to October 1st, 2024, with the theme ‘Swabhav Swachhata - Sanskaar Swachhata.’ This initiative precedes Swachh Bharat Diwas on October 2, 2024 and ‘Swachhata ka Mela’ will also be organized on the same day. A press conference was organized today by the university to share details with the media, which was addressed by Prof. Sirajuddin Ahmed, Nodal Person and Dr. Abid Husain, Co-Nodal Person of Swachhata Hi Seva campaign and Dr. Ahmad Azeem, PRO of the university.
During the Swachhata Pakhwara from 1st to 15th September, the university organized multiple activities within the campus and nearby localities to make the fortnight campaign successful. Activities like cleanliness drives in the campus and nearby localities were organized where the Officiating Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammad Shakeel, teachers, non-teaching staff, residents and students participated by offering shramdaan.
Repair and renovation of toilets were undertaken by the Building & construction Department of the university, mass awareness programs were organized in university and JMI schools, local celebrities like area MCD Councillors and Director of Al Shifa Hospital were engaged for creating awareness about swachhata and hygiene, Swachhata Seminar was organized by the Peace Clubs, NSS units of JMI in collaboration with Universal Peace Federation (UPF), a ‘waste to good’ exhibition was organized by the Fine Arts Faculty in association with sanitation unit. A conference on “Green & Clean Delhi: Challenges & Prospects for Sustainable Development was also organized by the university.
Swachhata rallies were taken out within the campus and nearby localities with Mass Swachhata Pledge and signature campaign event. Plantation drives were organized by the Horticulture Department and other departments under ‘एक पेड़ मां के नाम/ Plant4Mother’ campaign. More than four thousand saplings of different varieties have been planted in the campus using Miyawaki method from 10th July to till now. One thousand more saplings will be planted in the coming days. Painting competition with Swachhata as theme was organized, campaign on discarding single use plastic, Nukkad Natak by AJKMCRC on Swachhata theme were also organized at the university.
NSS units under the supervision of its Programme Officer Dr Abid Husain, Sanitation Unit headed by Dr Ayub Khan and Syed Razi Naqvi, Horticulture Department under the supervision of Horticulturist Dr Bharat Bhushan and Social Work Department played a very important role in making the fortnight successful. Nodal Person Vector Borne Disease Dr Mohammad Abdullah also played an important role.
During the ongoing ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ fortnight the university will organize various events and will reach out to nearby localities more to create awareness about cleanliness and hygiene.
