The Department of Electrical Engineering, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) organised One Week Short Term Training Programme (STTP) on “Role of Energy Management systems in Smart Grid” in online mode from 7th-12th June, 2021. The STTP was sponsored by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The STTP concluded with an evaluation test for the participants followed by valedictory function on 12th June 2021. The valedictory function was attended by participants, Programme Monitoring Committee Members as well as faculty members of the Department of Electrical Engineering, JMI.
The Inaugural Function was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, JMI, Prof. Najma Akhtar while Prof. K. K. Aggarwal, Chairman of National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the Founding Vice-Chancellor of Guru Govind Singh Indraprastha University was the Guest-of-Honour.Prof. Ikbal Ali, Co-coordinator of the STTP, presented the welcome address and an introduction to the STTP. During the address, Prof. Ikbal Ali explained about the Smart Grid research infrastructure that he developed utilizing DST FIST project grant of about Rs.2.0 Crores.
He also highlighted the initiatives and contributions of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Najma Akhtar, that how she spearheaded the university to ensure uninterrupted teaching and learning during COVID-19 pandemic along with ensuring emotional well beings of the Jamia fraternity. Prof. Ali also emphasized on the criticality of Energy Management Systems in Smart Grid in ensuring the reliable, efficient, secure and high-quality electricity delivery to the end users and mapped it to the role of a Vice Chancellor in a University.
Prof. Munna Khan, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, highlighted the ongoing research activities and recent achievements by its students and faculty members.Prof. Ibraheem, Dean F/o Engg. & Technology and the Coordinator of the STTP, presented a report on the Faculty of Engineering & Technology and its notable features and achievements. Prof. Ibraheem, in his remarks on the STTP, went on to highlight the role of Automatic Generation Control in Energy Management Systems of Smart Grid. He laid emphasis on the social impact of the implementation of smart grid technologies in terms of enhanced human comfort through improved quality, reliability and security of the electricity supply to the end users.
Prof. K. K. Aggarwal, Chairman, National Board of Accreditation (NBA), in his address to the participants of the STTP, expressed his love and appreciation for journey of the JMI to prominence and the contribution of the university’s faculty members in the accreditation process of technical institutes in the country. He also spoke at length to laid emphasis on the energy management systems in smart grid. He conveyed that management whether it be energy management in smart grid or of any system like that of a university is a challenging task and one should always be ready for graceful failure. Prof. K. K. Aggarwal also conveyed the importance of interdisciplinary approach as it can provide opportunities for out-of-the-box solutions to a complex problem.
Convener of the inauguration function, Prof. Shahida Khatoon, while conducting the programme also introduced the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Najma Akhtar, to the participants and laid emphasis on the role of modern control systems in smart grid. The chief guest of the inauguration function, Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar, applauded the efforts made by Prof. Ibraheem, in organizing the STTP on such an important topic of Smart Gid, and Prof. Ikbal Ali, for developing the teaching and research infrastructure.
She also mentioned the initiatives taken by JMI towards the sustainable environment by installing the roof-top PV electricity generation of 2.5 MW capacity. She expressed her happiness over the diversified participation of 135 engineering educators, research scholars and industry professionals as well as 22 speakers from different premium technical institutes across the country. The Vice Chancellor was also of the opinion that interdisciplinary approach, similar to that a smart grid needs, should be adopted to develop a sustainable solution.Inaugural function ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. Arunesh K.
