
A week-long workshop (Online) on ‘Capacity Building through Geo-spatial Techniques’ for the Research Scholars & PG students under the aegis of UGC SAP-DRS-1 Program started on 1st December, 2020, organised by Department of Geography, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) ended successfully on 6th December,2020.Dr. Prakash Chauhan, Director, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Govt. of India, Dehradun graced the occasion as the Chief Guest in the Valedictory Function of the workshop, held on 6th December,2020.
Prof. Mohd. Asaduddin, Advisor to the Vice Chancellor, Academics & Research and Dean, and Faculty of Humanities & Languages, JMI was the Guest of Honour at the function. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice Chancellor, JMI on 1st December,2020. The valedictory function started with a welcome address by Prof M. Ishtiaq, Department of Geography, JMI, who welcomed the Chief Guest, the Guest of Honor, faculty members, scholars, students and participants.
He also spoke about the long relationship between JMI and IIRS.58 Ph.D and Post Graduate students from universities like JNU, DU, AMU, JMI, University of Gour Banga, University of Burdwan, Aliah University, RGU- Arunachal Pradesh, Osmania University, TISS, Mumbai, Uni. of Kashmir, University of Jammu etc. attended the workshop. Prof. Atiqur Rahman, Coordinator of the Workshop & Coordinator, UGC-DRS-SAP-I, presented the detailed report of the workshop. Particiapnts gave very positive feedback about the workshop, particularly academic deliveries given by learned experts from national as well as international universities like University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, King Khalid Universiy, KSA, East China Normal University – Shanghai-China.Top experts from the University of Manchester, UK and Indian institutions like JNU, DU, JMI, Punjab University, IIT- Roorkee, TERI University, Delhi, PHFI-Delhi and IIRS delivered lectures during the week-long workshop.
Prof. Asaduddin spoke about stagnation in disciplines and how significant it is to develop the disciplines with changing technological developments in the world.The chief guest Dr. Prakash Chauhan delivered valedictory address where he spoke about the history of remote sensing, the latest developments in space technology, India’s contribution to such developments, the role of founding fathers in some of the great institutions of the world, the role of Prof. Vikram Sarabhai in the Indian context. He also stated how the availability of satellite data has given an impetus to research and development in various disciplines.He encouraged the students to work hard in those areas where there is still an acute shortage of literature especially regarding the ongoing pandemic related studies and problems and disasters arising due to climate change and global warming. The valedictory function was attanded by people like Prof. Shakeel Ahmad, NGRI, Hyderabad, Prof. Rejaur Rehman from University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh and many others.

Prof. Mary appraised consistent support and encouragement provided by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Najma Akhtar for organizing the workshop as well as other academic events.
