An online ten-day Research Methodology Course is being organised by the Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies (SNCWS), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in association with Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi from 18th August to 30th August 2021.JMI Vice Chancellor Prof. Najma Akhtar presided over the Inaugural Session of the course, held online on 19th August 2021. The event was attended by more than 70 participants comprising of eminent Resource Persons of the course, faculty members from the JMI and other universities, research scholars and students.During her Presidential Address Prof. Najma Akhtar talked about the importance of research and emphasized that conducting research methodology courses for students has become even more critical than ever because of the changing nature of data, increasing volumes of data and the data-intensive economy which require research literacy and skills for better employability.
Prof. Akhtar also added that there is a need for an Interdisciplinary/ Multidisciplinary approach to research and hoped that the Research Methodology course would increase the knowledge of the participants and would encourage them to conduct quality research work.Prof. Sabiha Hussain, Course Director and Director, SNCWS welcomed the delegates and participants, apprised them about Centre’s activities, achievements and key objectives of the course. She said that the objective of the course is to develop research skills amongst the scholars, make them familiar with both theoretical and practical aspects of research.She shared detailed information about course layout having 40 sessions, 22 eminent Resource Persons from various social science disciplines and leading universities, chosen 38 research scholars as per ICSSR guidelines from Central, State and Regional Universities for the course. Evaluation strategy has been planned to measure the learning level of the participants.
A Google classroom has been created to upload the reading materials.Introductory Remarks were given by Prof. Ravinder Kumar, the Dean of School of Social Sciences, JMI. Prof. Ravinder Kumar highlighted the importance and usefulness of social science research; a source of knowledge, contributes to cohesion and unity, helps in solving social problems, bringing structural changes in the society, innovation and creativity.Guest of Honour and ICSSR Observer, Prof. Aswini K. Mohapatra, Dean of School of International Studies, JNU emphasized on the purpose of research methodology, deconstruction of ideas and concepts, plurality of thoughts and ways of conducting the research. Prof. Aswini enlightened the participants about the indigenous ways of conducting quality research.
Chief Guest of the event Dr. (Mrs.) Pankaj Mittal, Secretary General, Association of Indian Universities(AIU), Former Vice Chancellor, Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Haryana talked about continuing problems faced by social science research in the country such as lack of funds, quality of research, serious issue plagiarism, and duplicity of research work.Dr. Mittal highlighted the importance given to research under NEP 2020, provision of National Research Foundation (NRF) and how one can use such opportunity. She also talked about the need for collaborative research projects both nationally and internationally and focused research. The Chief Guest categorically mentioned that Passion is a key to quality research.The program ended with a vote of thanks proposed by the Co-Course Director Dr. Suraiya Tabassum, Assistant Professor, SNCWS, JMI.
