The Department of Teacher Training and Non-Formal Education (IASE), Faculty of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia, commenced a Five-Day Workshop on “Identification and Assessment of Children with Special Needs”, scheduled from November 6th to November 12th, 2025. The workshop is especially curated for M.Ed. Special Education (Learning Disabilities and Visual Impairments) students of 1st and 3rd semesters. In this workshop, the 3rd semester students undertook the role of organizers, while the 1st semester students participated as learners.
The inaugural ceremony began with the soulful recitation of Tilawat-e-Quran by Aftab, setting a serene and respectful tone for the program. This was followed by a warm and cordial Welcome Speech delivered by M Ed student Neeti, who extended greetings to all dignitaries, faculty members, and participants. M.Ed students Jitin and Jaswant Lall then introduced the Workshop Brochure and Organizer Presentation, outlining the theme, objectives, and overall planning undertaken by the organizing team. M Ed student Aarti presented an overview About the Programme, highlighting the significance of assessment tools for children with diverse learning needs.
The inaugural session began with an enlightening address by Prof. Anita Rastogi, Dean, Faculty of Education who shared her valuable insights on the four ways of learning from the Mahabharata. She also elaborated on the various terms used to describe a teacher, emphasizing that it depends upon each one of us to choose and embody the role that best reflects our values and teaching philosophy.
Prof. Syedah Fawzia Nadeem & Prof. Farah Farooqi, Head of the Department of Teacher Training and Non-Formal Education (IASE), conveyed their best wishes for the successful conduct of the workshop, as they were unable to attend in person due to prior academic engagements.
Dr. Mohd. Faijullah Khan also extended his best wishes for the successful and fruitful conduct of the workshop. He encouraged the participants to gain comprehensive knowledge of the various tools and techniques introduced during the sessions, emphasizing that such learning would greatly benefit their professional growth and future endeavors.
Following this, Dr. R. Jamuna highlighted the importance of workshops in professional development, stressing how such sessions contribute to the enhancement of practical knowledge and pedagogical skills.
Dr. Tausif Alam further enriched the session by sharing his own experiences related to workshops. He underlined their significance as effective platforms for gaining new knowledge and exposure without any financial barriers. He also conveyed his best wishes for the successful completion of the program.
As a gesture of gratitude and appreciation, certificates were presented to Every teacher by Dr. Saurabh Ray, marking a respectful acknowledgment of their contribution and active participation in the workshop.
Following the inaugural addresses, M.Ed student Isha, explained guidelines related to participation norms, session flow, reflection tasks.
Subsequently, Dr. Saurabh Ray, who serves as the Coordinator of the M.Ed. Special Education Program and also the Workshop Convener, addressed the gathering. In his insightful remarks, he emphasized the significance of equipping future educators with evidence-based assessment practices, highlighting how such approaches enhance the quality and effectiveness of Special Education teaching. This was followed by greetings and encouraging remarks shared by faculty members present at the session. Their words of motivation highlighted the role of specialized training in nurturing competent and empathetic special educators.
The inaugural session concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Farheen, expressing heartfelt gratitude to all resource persons, guests, faculty members, organizers, and participants for their valuable contributions to the successful commencement of the workshop.
The best wishes were sent by all the distinguished faculty members including Prof. (Dr) Sara Begum, Prof (Dr.) Bharti Sharma, Dr. Eram Nasir, Dr. Pettala Ramakrishna, Mr. Mohd Zuber, Dr. Mumtaz Bano and Dr. Sunita Bhangu. The session marked a meaningful beginning to the workshop, reflecting commitment, teamwork, and a shared vision towards enhancing professional competence in Special Education.
