Colombo | April 22, 2026
Strengthening maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean region, the Indian Navy’s diving support and submarine rescue vessel INS Nireekshak has arrived at Colombo to participate in the fourth edition of the bilateral diving exercise SLINEX DIVEEX 2026.
This deployment is not just a routine naval exercise—it is a calibrated strategic move to deepen India–Sri Lanka maritime interoperability and regional influence, especially amid increasing geopolitical competition in the Indian Ocean.
1. Operational Synergy & Capability Building
Indian and Sri Lankan naval diving teams will conduct:
- Specialized underwater operations
- Submarine rescue simulations
- Joint training drills
Objective: Enhance interoperability, response readiness, and technical alignment
2. Defence Diplomacy in Action
The visit includes:
- High-level engagement between Commander Shailesh Tyagi and Sri Lankan Navy leadership
- Cultural exchanges, sports events, and joint yoga sessions
This builds soft power equity alongside hard defence collaboration
3. Humanitarian & Strategic Signaling
Under India’s ‘Arogya Maitri’ initiative, India will:
- Donate two ‘Bheeshma Cubes’ (portable emergency medical units capable of handling 200 cases)
- Supply 50,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition
This dual approach signals:
- Humanitarian leadership
- Security partnership commitment.
