Nifty 50 opened at 23,895.80, down 100.45 points, while the Sensex fell 399.43 points to 76,355.62.
The broader market also opened under pressure, with Nifty Midcap 100 down 0.34% and Nifty IT declining 0.36%. Nifty Bank fell 449.50 points, or 0.79%, to 56,677.30.
Market breadth remained weak, with 603 stocks advancing against 994 declining on the NSE.
At the time of the update, NYMEX was up 1.61 points, while Brent crude rose 2.17 points.
