Jaipur, August 18, 2025: In a first for the city, Fortis Hospital Jaipur successfully hosted the IOA Basic Hand Surgery Course 2025 bringing together some of India’s most respected hand and orthopaedic surgeons under one roof. Organised in collaboration with the Jaipur Hand Surgery Association (JHSA), Rajasthan Orthopaedic Surgeons Association (ROSA), and Jaipur Orthopaedic Society (JOS), the event aimed to equip surgeons with cutting-edge skills to diagnose and treat hand, wrist, and elbow injuries that, if neglected, can lead to lifelong disability.
The interactive workshop featured renowned names including Dr Amit Kumar Vyas (Consultant – Hand Surgery, Fortis Jaipur), Dr Purnima Patni (President, JHSA), Dr Narendra Saini (Secretary, JHSA), Dr Parag B. Lad (IOA Faculty, Mumbai), Dr Abhijeet Wahegaonkar (Chairman, IOA Hand Committee), Dr Ajeet Tiwari (Member, IOA Hand Committee), and JHSA Members- Dr Vinit Arora, Dr Aviral Gupta, Dr Ashok Meena, and Dr Divyansh Sharma.
The day was packed with hands-on case discussions, live problem-solving panels, and scenario-based learning covering topics such as managing wrist fractures, preventing missed perilunate dislocations, early detection of scaphoid fractures, nerve repair, tendon injuries, and rehabilitation strategies.
Speaking at the session, Dr Amit Kumar Vyas (Consultant – Hand Surgery, Fortis Jaipur) said, “Hand injuries are easy to dismiss & often not taken that seriously, but even the smallest of fractures or tendon injuries can result in significant disability if not diagnosed and treated correctly. Through this course, we aim to equip surgeons with both the theoretical knowledge and the practical decision-making skills required to restore function, reduce recovery time, and ultimately improve the patient’s quality of life. With comprehensive sessions covering fractures of the fingers, hand, wrist, and elbow, as well as nerve and tendon injuries, the IOA Basic Hand Surgery Course underscores Fortis Jaipur’s commitment to advancing orthopaedic education and improving surgical outcomes for our patients.”
Dr Purnima Patni (President, JHSA) added, “By bringing together experienced surgeons under one roof, this workshop aims to create a platform for healthy exchange of knowledge around the latest techniques, discussing challenging cases, and refining surgical skills amongst surgeons. Sessions like these ensure that knowledge is not confined to textbooks but is translated into real-world skill. From case-based discussions on finger and wrist fractures to panels on nerve and tendon repair, every session today was designed to equip surgeons with practical, immediately applicable insights.”
“Phalangeal and metacarpal fractures are common, yet their management requires a deep understanding of anatomy, biomechanics and the right choice of fixation. By combining targeted lectures with sessions on early detection of scaphoid fractures, strategies for non-union, and preventing long-term complications, the course offered a holistic approach to managing hand trauma. Early diagnosis, meticulous surgical technique and structured rehabilitation are key to restoring movement and preventing chronic disability.” said Dr Parag B. Lad (IOA Faculty, Mumbai).
Highlighting the importance of precision in fracture care, Dr Narendra Saini (Secretary, JHSA) noted, “In orthopaedics, smaller structures like hands & fingers often require the most precise care from surgeons. Even a small fragment, if not properly aligned and fixed, can affect joint function permanently. This course will help surgeons develop the skill and confidence to handle such challenges effectively, even in resource-limited settings.”
