The action follows complaints from farmers who alleged that substandard seeds and saplings led to severe losses in their bitter gourd (karela) crops. Farmers had purchased the seeds in November 2025, but after sowing, the crop failed to deliver expected yields. The fruits reportedly turned yellow, remained small, and dropped prematurely, causing significant financial losses.
Taking serious note of the issue, Shivraj Singh Chouhan termed it a direct attack on farmers’ livelihoods and trust. He directed officials to ensure fair compensation for affected farmers and to initiate stringent legal action against those responsible.
Following these directions, an FIR has been registered at Manawar police station in Dhar district under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and the Seeds Act, 1966.
Preliminary investigations indicate that substandard seeds were sold to farmers under the label of certified products. Additionally, directions have been issued to impose a ban on the disputed ‘Rubasta’ variety of seeds.
