Jaipur: Advanced healthcare services at RUHS Hospital continue to expand and strengthen. In a significant development, cochlear implant surgery has now been initiated at the hospital. On Friday, RUHS successfully performed its first-ever cochlear implant surgery, marking an important milestone in providing state-of-the-art treatment for children and adults with severe to profound hearing impairment in Rajasthan.
It is noteworthy that recently, Medical and Health Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Khimsar had directed the expansion of healthcare services at RUHS Hospital. Additionally, Principal Secretary (Medical Education) Ms. Gayatri Rathore visited the hospital and reviewed services, instructing officials to further strengthen super-specialty medical care. In line with these directions, the hospital administration has commenced cochlear implant surgeries.
Hospital Superintendent Dr. Mahesh Mangal informed that the first beneficiary of the cochlear implant surgery is three-year-old Vamika from Bhilwara, who had been suffering from congenital severe hearing loss. Despite the use of hearing aids, she was not receiving adequate benefit. After detailed medical evaluation and expert consultation, she was found suitable for cochlear implant surgery. Through this procedure, the child has gained a crucial opportunity to develop hearing and speech abilities.
Member of the surgical team Dr. Mohneesh Grover stated that after surgery, Vamika will require regular hearing and speech therapy for approximately two years, which is an essential and integral part of cochlear implant treatment. Medical evidence shows that early-age cochlear implantation combined with appropriate rehabilitation therapy leads to significant improvement in hearing, speech, and social development in children.
Dr. Raghav Mehta explained that the estimated total cost of cochlear implant treatment is around ₹8 lakh, which includes the implant device, surgery, hospitalization, and rehabilitation services. The entire treatment is being provided free of cost under the State Government’s Chief Minister Ayushman Arogya Scheme, ensuring access to this advanced medical facility for economically weaker families.
This complex and advanced surgical procedure was successfully carried out with complete coordination and expertise by the hospital’s specialist teams. The ENT team included Dr. Ramlakhan Meena, Dr. Ambika Devda, and Dr. Sunil Yadav. The Anaesthesia team comprised Dr. Varun Saini, Dr. Manish Khandelwal, Dr. Sandeep, Dr. Pratima, and Dr. Satveer Singh. The nursing team included Man Singh Gehlot and Seema Jat, who played a key role.
