The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, today celebrated its 125th Foundation Day at its headquarters in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, marking over a century of dedicated service towards ensuring the safety, health, and welfare of mine workers across the country.
The event was graced by Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Ms. Shobha Karandlaje, as the Chief Guest. Also present on the occasion were DGMS Director General Mr. Ujjwal Tah, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ms. Deepika Kachhal, senior officials of DGMS and the Ministry, representatives from the mining industry, and other key stakeholders.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Karandlaje said that DGMS’s 125-year journey reflects the dedication, commitment, and sacrifices of its officers and mine workers, especially those who worked under challenging and hazardous conditions in earlier times. She emphasized that mining activities today are integral to India’s growth and development, and paid tribute to mine workers whose courage and perseverance—often involving serious risks to life—continue to contribute to nation-building.
Reiterating that worker safety remains the highest priority of the Ministry in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Safety First,” the Minister underscored the critical role played by DGMS in ensuring uniform safety standards across all mining operations in the country. She highlighted the need for strong Centre–State coordination and enhanced engagement of DGMS field offices to ensure effective enforcement of safety norms.
