Glasgow, July 27, 2026: India’s Bindyarani Devi won the bronze medal in the women’s 58kg weightlifting final at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Monday.
Bindyarani finished with a combined lift of 199kg, comprising 87kg in the snatch and 112kg in the clean and jerk. The 27-year-old Indian lifter secured the bronze after a closely contested final.
Bindyarani initially lifted 110kg in her first clean and jerk attempt, but the lift was later ruled a no-lift following a review. She then successfully lifted 112kg in her next attempt to move into medal contention. Her final attempt at 116kg was unsuccessful.
Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal won the gold medal with a Games Record total of 229kg, including a 103kg snatch and 126kg clean and jerk. Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau claimed the silver medal with a total of 215kg.
The bronze medal marked India’s fifth medal in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
India’s weightlifting medal winners so far are:
- Mirabai Chanu — Gold in women’s 48kg
- Rishikanta Singh Chanambam — Silver in men’s 60kg
- Muthupandi Raja — Silver in men’s 65kg
- Gyaneshwari Yadav — Silver in women’s 53kg
- Bindyarani Devi — Bronze in women’s 58kg
Earlier in the day, Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver in the women’s 53kg event with a personal-best total of 199kg, including 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk.
India also progressed in several other events. Murali Sreeshankar and Lokesh Satyanathan qualified for the men’s long jump final, while Tejas Shirse advanced to the men’s 110m hurdles final. In swimming, Sajan Prakash qualified for the men’s 200m butterfly final and Swatik Patil reached the men’s 100m breaststroke SB9 final.
In boxing, Sachin Siwach advanced to the men’s 60kg quarter-finals after defeating England’s William Hewitt in a 4-1 split decision, while Ankush Panghal progressed to the men’s 80kg quarter-finals with a 5-0 win over Antigua and Barbuda’s Zalaan Jan.
Meanwhile, Gurindervir Singh was eliminated from the men’s 100m after clocking 10.39 seconds in the heats and finishing 28th overall.
