Jaipur, May 11:
A one-day training programme on procurement through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal was organised on Monday via video conference to enhance awareness and operational understanding among personnel of cooperative societies.
During the session, expert trainer Anant Thukral provided detailed guidance on the procurement process through the GeM portal and explained its role in strengthening transparency and efficiency in government purchasing systems.
Thukral said the GeM portal, operated by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, has emerged as a key platform for public procurement across the country. Launched in 2016, the portal offers a one-stop digital marketplace for government departments and public sector undertakings to procure goods and services in a seamless, transparent, and efficient manner.
He highlighted that the GeM platform is completely cashless and paperless, significantly reducing the role of intermediaries while helping save public funds through competitive and transparent procurement mechanisms.
Explaining the procurement process, Thukral said purchases on the portal can be carried out through three different methods depending on the value of goods or services required.
- Direct purchases can be made for items or services valued up to ₹50,000.
- Purchases ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹10 lakh can be processed by obtaining quotations from at least three firms and comparing the proposals.
- Procurement exceeding ₹10 lakh is carried out through a formal bidding process on the portal.
The training session also covered the role and responsibilities of buyers, benefits available to sellers, and the step-by-step registration process on the GeM portal. Participants were given practical insights into navigating the platform and ensuring compliance with digital procurement procedures.
