Speculation over Bihar’s next Chief Minister has intensified after Nitish Kumar filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha, signaling the possibility of stepping away from the state’s top executive post. The development has triggered political discussions across the state about who could replace the long-serving leader.
Among the many names being discussed in political circles is Chirag Paswan, the young leader of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas). Although he is not currently the frontrunner, analysts believe that changing political equations within the National Democratic Alliance could open unexpected possibilities.
Bihar politics has witnessed surprise leadership decisions in the past. Similar unexpected choices were seen in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Odisha, where relatively less-expected leaders were elevated to the chief minister’s post. Because of such precedents, some observers believe that Chirag Paswan cannot be completely ruled out if the alliance decides to project a younger face.
However, political discussions currently place Samrat Choudhary, the Deputy Chief Minister from Bharatiya Janata Party, among the leading contenders if the ruling alliance decides to appoint a new chief minister.
Chirag Paswan, son of late Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, has emerged as one of Bihar’s prominent young political figures in recent years. He began his parliamentary career in 2014 by winning the Jamui Lok Sabha seat and retained his influence in state politics. In the 2024 general election, he contested and won from Hajipur, a constituency long associated with his father.
