Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, has claimed support of 120 MLAs to form the next government in Tamil Nadu after emerging as the single largest party in the Assembly elections.
TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly and required 118 seats to cross the majority mark.
The party said it has received unconditional support from Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for government formation.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, TVK leader Adhav Arjuna said the alliance backing Vijay now has the support required to stake claim to form the government.
According to the party, the supporting bloc includes the Indian National Congress with five MLAs, along with the Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), VCK and IUML, which have two MLAs each.
Vijay, who reportedly won from two Assembly constituencies, will have to vacate one seat, reducing TVK’s effective strength from 108 to 107 MLAs. However, with the support of alliance partners, the party said its tally reaches 120 MLAs.
