After nearly three years without an elected civic body, Mumbai is set to return to the ballot as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections will be held on January 15, 2026, with results declared on January 16.
The State Election Commission announced the schedule following a Supreme Court directive mandating completion of all pending local body elections in Maharashtra before January 31, 2026. The earlier delay was caused by legal disputes over ward restructuring and OBC reservation.
Voting will take place in a single phase across all 227 wards, making it one of the largest civic elections in the state. January 15 has been declared a public holiday to encourage voter participation.

Political Context
The last BMC election was held in 2017, when the undivided Shiv Sena emerged as the largest party. Since then, Maharashtra politics has undergone major realignments, including splits in Shiv Sena and NCP, making the upcoming contest highly competitive.
Opposition parties have raised concerns over voter rolls, alleging inaccuracies and duplicate entries. Meanwhile, the ruling alliance has defended administrative decisions taken during the period when the BMC was run by appointed administrators.
Why This Election Matters
The BMC is India’s richest municipal body, with an annual budget exceeding ₹60,000 crore, responsible for civic services for nearly 1.2 crore residents. Issues such as road conditions, flooding, sanitation, infrastructure, and rising civic taxes are expected to dominate the campaign.
What to Expect on Results Day
Vote counting on January 16 is expected to conclude by evening, delivering Mumbai’s first civic verdict after major political changes in the state since 2022.
