After the crash, the passenger list of the flight was made public. Flight AI 171 of Air India had a total of 230 passengers onboard. Vijay Rupani's name appeared on the passenger list at number 12, and his seat number was recorded as 2D.
Vijay Rupani was en route to London. According to information, the plane took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad at 1:38 PM for London but could not even cross the airport boundary. The Air India plane crashed at 1:40 PM, and the Ahmedabad sky was engulfed in smoke and fire.
Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel over the phone regarding the accident. Seven to eight fire brigade vehicles reached the site for relief and rescue operations. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams also arrived and started relief efforts. All hospitals in Ahmedabad have been put on alert.
