The UGC, in its 542nd meeting held on 2nd August 2019, considered the reports of the Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) appointed by the Government under the chairmanship of Shri N. Gopalaswami, which recommended 15 public institutions and 15 private institutions for consideration for Institution of Eminence (IoE) status.
Since the scheme provides for only 10 public and 10 private institutions, the UGC examined the list using transparent and verifiable criteria.
The following principles were used to identify the final 10 public and 10 private institutions from the list of 15 in each category:
- Preference was given to institutions that have already figured in global or national rankings, as the scheme aims to prepare institutions for global standards.
- If any slots remained vacant after applying the above criterion, consideration would be given to “greenfield” (yet-to-be-established) proposals.
Public Institutions:
In accordance with these principles, the UGC ranked the list of 15 recommended institutions based on the QS World University Rankings 2020. In cases of ties, the QS India Rankings 2019 were used as a tiebreaker.
Accordingly, the following institutions were recommended for grant of IoE status:
