March 11, 2026 – In a significant relief for Telangana's agrarian community, Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has greenlit the state government's proposal for procuring over 1.25 lakh metric tonnes of key rabi crops at Minimum Support Price (MSP) under the Price Support Scheme (PSS). The approval, valued at more than ₹894 crore, targets pulses and oilseeds to shield farmers from market volatility and ensure fair returns.
The procurement will cover 29,860 MT of chickpeas (chana), 37,020 MT of black gram (urad), 55,285 MT of groundnut (moongphali), and 3,690 MT of sunflower seeds for the rabi 2026 season. This move aligns with the Centre's ongoing commitment to farmer welfare, emphasizing income enhancement and crop diversification in pulses and oilseeds.
Speaking on the decision, Chouhan underscored the Modi government's farmer-first approach: "Our goal is to deliver the full value of farmers' hard work and protect them from market fluctuations. This approval not only guarantees remunerative prices for Telangana's producers but also accelerates production in pulses and oilseeds, fostering rural economic stability."
The minister highlighted how such interventions prevent distress sales at low prices, providing both economic security and market confidence. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, he added, the government remains steadfast in empowering agriculture, strengthening rural economies, and honoring farmers' contributions.
This development is poised to directly benefit growers of chickpeas, black gram, groundnut, and sunflower in Telangana, injecting stability and prosperity into the state's farming sector while bolstering national food security goals.
