Mumbai, April 12, 2026: Legendary singer Asha Bhosle, whose versatile voice defined Indian film music for more than eight decades, passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Sunday.
Admitted on Saturday with extreme exhaustion and a chest infection, she succumbed to multi-organ failure, her son Anand Bhosle confirmed. Public last respects will be held from 11 am on Monday at Casa Grande, Lower Parel, with last rites at 4 pm at Shivaji Park.
Asha Bhosle’s extraordinary career began in the 1940s and continued into 2026. She lent her voice to timeless classics including “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja”, “Chura Liya Hai Tumne”, “Dum Maro Dum”, “Dil Cheez Kya Hai”, “Rangeela Re” and “Radha Kaise Na Jale”, among thousands of others recorded in multiple Indian languages.
What made her unique was her ability to stay relevant across eras — from O.P. Nayyar’s rhythmic hits and R.D. Burman’s experimental sound to A.R. Rahman’s modern compositions. Her work also extended to Marathi, Bengali, Tamil and other regional cinema, as well as non-film albums and international projects.
As tributes pour in, many are highlighting how her songs continue to thrive on streaming platforms, wedding playlists and short video reels, bridging the gap between black-and-white cinema and today’s digital listening habits.
