Many people who are asking for the new cricketing "baby boss," Vaibhav Suryavanshi, to make his debut for India are right in some aspects, but perhaps a little premature in others.
First, let's discuss why Vaibhav Suryavanshi deserves consideration for an ODI debut. In the Tata IPL 2026 season, he has impressed everyone with his fearless batting. He has taken on some of the best international bowlers and consistently found the boundary. More importantly, he has shown signs of maturity in crucial situations. His recent knock of 96 runs against Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh was another example of his immense talent, even though he eventually got out attempting a shot behind square on a short ball.
At the moment, Vaibhav appears to be at the peak of his stroke-making ability. The one area he still needs to develop further is temperament and game awareness, although he did show encouraging signs of that during the quarter-final against Gujarat Titans.
However, there is another side to the debate. India's T20 setup is already packed with talented opening batters such as Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan. Finding a place for Vaibhav in the playing XI may not be easy. He could be given opportunities against relatively weaker teams or in bilateral series to help him gain international exposure.
The bigger question is whether Vaibhav should make his India debut immediately or spend a few more years in domestic cricket. Playing domestic cricket consistently could help him become a more complete cricketer. It would allow him to improve his temperament, refine his approach to different match situations, and further develop his technical skills. By the time he enters international cricket, he could be even better prepared for the challenges at the highest level.
What do you think? Should Vaibhav Suryavanshi be given an immediate opportunity in the Indian team, or should he spend more time in domestic cricket before making the step up? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
