In a major statewide crackdown to protect consumer interests, the Rajasthan Consumer Affairs Department conducted surprise inspections at 226 petrol pumps across 20 districts between May 5 and May 18.
The special enforcement drive, carried out by 23 inspection teams under the direction of Consumer Affairs Minister Sumit Godara, found serious irregularities at several fuel stations. Action was taken against 110 petrol pumps under the Legal Metrology Act, with total penalties amounting to ₹2.21 lakh.
During inspections, 60 petrol pumps were found delivering less fuel than prescribed quantities to consumers. Authorities seized or shut down 103 fuel nozzles and imposed fines worth ₹1.53 lakh. Investigators discovered short delivery ranging from 30 ml to 120 ml per 5 litres of petrol or diesel.
According to departmental estimates, these irregularities were causing consumers to lose nearly 211 litres of fuel daily, amounting to an estimated financial loss of around ₹21,100 per day. On a monthly basis, the loss could reach approximately 6,357 litres worth ₹6.35 lakh.
Jaipur reported action against 3 petrol pumps with 12 nozzles seized, while Barmer, Nagaur, Sirohi, Dausa, Bharatpur, Alwar, Jodhpur, Pali and several other districts also witnessed significant enforcement action.
Apart from short delivery cases, violations of Legal Metrology rules were detected at 72 petrol pumps, mainly related to unverified 5-litre measuring units and non-display of verification certificates. These violations resulted in additional penalties of ₹68,500.
