Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram has been sent to Tihar Jail by a Special CBI court in Delhi in connection with the INX Media corruption case.
Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar sent him to 14-day judicial custody till the 19th of this month.
The court allowed the Congress leader to carry his medicines to jail and directed that he be kept in a separate cell in Tihar prison as he was a protectee under Z-security.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured that there will be adequate security for him in the jail.
P Chidambaram was produced before the Delhi Court today after the expiry of his 2-day CBI custody in the case. His 15-day CBI custody, ordered by the special court in five spells, which started after his arrest on 21st of August ended today.
During the hearing, the CBI demanded that Mr Chidambaram be sent to judicial custody. The CBI had registered an FIR against him in May 2017 for alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of 305 crore rupees in 2007 during Chidambaram’s tenure as Finance Minister.
After that, the Enforcement Directorate lodged a money laundering case in this regard in 2017.
