New Delhi, March 26, 2026: The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of reports highlighting the alleged deaths of 285 prisoners in various jails across Chhattisgarh over the past four years.
According to media reports cited by the Commission, the state government informed the विधानसभा that the deaths were primarily due to suicide and prolonged illnesses. Data indicates that the highest number of deaths—90 cases—was recorded in 2022, while 66 deaths occurred between January 2025 and January 31, 2026.
The Commission observed that if the reported facts are accurate, the matter raises serious concerns of human rights violations. It noted that overcrowding in prisons, coupled with inadequate healthcare infrastructure, could be contributing factors.
The NHRC has issued notices to the state’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Prisons, directing them to submit a detailed report within two weeks. The report must include:
- Data on overcrowding in jails
- Status of vacant medical and psychiatric positions
- Measures taken by the state government to address these issues
Reports also suggest that many prisons in the state are operating beyond their capacity, leading to increased risks of infection and mental stress among inmates, while facing a shortage of doctors and mental health professionals.
