The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has commenced its first Online Short-Term Internship Programme (OSTI) of 2026, with 80 university-level students shortlisted from 1,114 applicants across 19 States and Union Territories. The two-week programme began on February 3 and will conclude on February 13, 2026.
The programme was inaugurated by NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian in the presence of Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal and senior officials of the Commission.
Addressing the interns, Justice Ramasubramanian said the internship aligns with the NHRC’s mandate under the Protection of Human Rights Act to promote human rights awareness among youth. Quoting verses from ancient Indian scriptures, including the Rigveda, he underlined that compassion and forgiveness have been central to India’s civilisational ethos. He urged interns to cultivate empathy and human values, stating that becoming better human beings is essential before becoming better professionals.
Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal said the internship aims to sensitise young minds to emerge as defenders and ambassadors of human rights. He emphasised that human rights are rooted in real-life experiences and everyday conduct, encouraging interns to look beyond laws and judgments to understand grievances, lived realities, and preventive approaches through awareness.
Joint Secretary Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak presented a detailed overview of the programme’s curriculum, which includes expert lectures and virtual tours of institutions such as Tihar Jail, shelter homes, and police stations to provide practical exposure to human rights issues. She also highlighted interactive activities and competitions designed to deepen understanding and build confidence among participants.
