Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Sunday termed the alleged protocol breach during President Droupadi Murmu’s recent visit to West Bengal as “unfortunate” and urged political leaders to respect constitutional offices.
In a statement posted on social media, Mayawati said everyone must uphold the dignity and protocol associated with the office of the President in accordance with the ideals of the Indian Constitution. She also advised Mamata Banerjee to ensure such incidents do not occur.
The BSP leader noted that Murmu is not only the country’s President but also a woman from the tribal community, and therefore the incident should not have happened. She stressed that constitutional posts should not be politicized in any manner.
Mayawati also raised concerns about what she described as increasing politicization of key constitutional offices, including the position of the Lok Sabha Speaker. She called on all political parties to rise above partisan politics and maintain the dignity of constitutional institutions.
She further expressed hope that the upcoming session of Parliament would function smoothly in the interest of the country and the public.
