
Ladakhi New Year being celebrated today

Union Territory Ladakh is celebrating Losar Festival today, to mark the Ladakhi New Year. People of various parts of Ladakh region, celebrate Losar on the 1st Day of Eleventh Month of Tibetan Calendar correlating to a date in the Gregorian calendar. The celebrations continue for three to nine days in different parts of Ladakh. Losar is also observed in all the Himalayan states of the country in different times.
Losar Festival celebrations include making symbolic meals and offerings to God and Goddess. Houses are decorated with good luck signs for prosperous New Year and bounty of crops. Dough Models of Sun, Moon, Sheep, Goats, Ibex and Antelope are kept in kitchen shelves for good omen. To mark the beginning of New Year, prayer flags will be hoisted at important religious places. Till last year, Losar gathering use to have UT Status for Ladakh as resolution for the New Year.
This year, it will be joyous Losar festival celebrations in the newly born Union Territory Ladakh. Ladakh Buddhist Association in collaboration with the Union Territory Administration is organizing a grand celebration today at Chokanga Vihara in Leh, where Lieutenant Governor R K Mathur will be attending as chief guest. Losar is also one of the major attractions for tourists in winter season, as the festival coupled with several ritual performances and traditional events.
