New Delhi, March 5: The Department of Economics, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi is organizing a Global Conclave on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Progress Challenges and Way Forward during 6-7 March, 2024. Eminent Economists, Policy makers and Civil Society Organizations are expected to participate in the conclave. The event is sponsored by Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi.
SDGs comprises a comprehensive set of 17 transformative goals encompassing the social, political economic, environmental dimensions adopted by United Nations in 2015 and to be achieved by 2030. As the year 2023 marks the halfway of the timeline towards the achievements of SDGs goals and targets, a critical assessment of progress becomes an imperative. This conclave aims to address challenges and strategize a future course of action, in march towards the ambitious target of achieving SDGs for Global South by the 2030.
The two day event is spread across 14 technical sessions, 3 important plenary sessions besides inaugural and valedictory functions. In the inaugural session Partha Sen, former Director, Delhi School of Economics will deliver presidential address and Inaugural address will be delivered by Dr. Rajan Sudesh Ratna, Deputy Head and Senior Economic Affairs Officer, UNESCAP, New Delhi. Mr. Uchita De Zoysa, Chairman, Global Sustainability Solutions (GLOSS), Colombo, Srilanka and Prof. Mohd. Muslim Khan, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, JMI will be the guest of honours.
The first plenary session scheduled at 11.30 on 6th March, 2024 will witness debate on Human Development and its Financing. The eminent plenary speakers are: Prof. Achin Chakraborty, former Director, IDS, Kolkata, Dr. Tauhidur Rahman, Arizona University, USA, Prof R Kavita Rao, Director, NIPFP, New Delhi and Prof. Santosh Mehrotra, Former Professor, JNU and Visiting Professor University of Bath, UK.
The second plenary will be centered on Climate Change, Health and Sustainable Growth. The main presenters are: Prof. Arun Kumar, Former Professor, JNU, Prof Joyshree Roy, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand and Prof. Srijit Mishra, IGIDR. The session will be chaired by Prof. Praveen Jha, JNU. The third plenary will be held online on 7th March, 2024 at 9 am. The theme of the plenary is poverty, inequality and growth. The eminent panelist are: Prof. Nanak Kakwani, Former Professor, UNSW, Australia, Prof Amitabh Kundu, Former Professor, JNU and WRI, New Delhi and Dr. Guarav Datt, Monash University, Australia.
