
The Department of Sociology, Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) , organized an online lecture on “Health, Human Rights and the Constitution: A Socio-legal Analysis” by Prof. Tapan Mohanty, National Law Institute, Bhopal on Monday, 24th January, 2022. Prof. Mohanty is the Chairperson of Centre for Socio-legal Studies and Dean, Department of Distance Education at National Law Institute University, Bhopal.
Prof. Manisha Tripathy Pandey, Head, Department of Sociology, JMI, delivered the welcome address, greeting the invited speaker, faculty members, scholars, and students. She said, ‘Republic Day marks an important event in India’s history and the talk today is a part of the Republic Day celebration by the Department’.
She, then, introduced the esteemed speaker, Prof. Tapan Mohanty, who was greeted by a round of applause.The lecture revolved around the approach of the government towards healthcare in India. Through this lecture, Prof Mohanty traced the history of healthcare in India and later focused on the Constitutional perspective. The speaker provided dynamic yet critical perspective and emphasized on the need for a proactive realization of constitutional goals. He advocated for the enactment of Right to Health. Bringing the current pandemic and vaccination into play, he talked about the engaging civil society into action, amidst the discussion on rights, privacy and health security.
This was followed by an engaging and in-depth question-answer session and illuminating discussion. The event was brought to an end with a vote of thanks by the Head. The talk was enthusiastically attended by a large crowd of scholars, students, and faculty from the university.
