Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) conducted a cleanliness drive titled, 'Swachh Bharat and Clean Jamia - Green Jamia' at the university's Ajmal Bagh Staff Quarter premises on 6th January 2025. The event was organized by the Office of the Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW) in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of the varsity.
Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor JMI, Prof. Mazhar Asif, and the esteemed Registrar, Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, graced the occasion with their presence. The cleanliness drive witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, staff and residents of Ajmal Bagh, all coming together to uphold the spirit of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Prof. Neelofer Afzal, Dean Students’ Welfare, JMI, welcomed the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar by presenting them with a sapling, symbolizing the university's commitment to green initiatives. Prof. Naved Jamal, Chief Proctor, JMI, and Mr. Viqar Husain Siddiqui, Jamia NSS Programme Coordinator also extended a warm welcome to the esteemed guests and actively participated in the cleanliness drive. The event commenced with a ceremonial welcome by the Jamia NSS team with residents of Begum Hazrat Mahal Girls’ Hostel facilitating the smooth conduct of the program. The Vice-Chancellor and other JMI staff members took part in the symbolic cleaning activity, inspiring faculty members, students, staff and residents to take ownership of their surroundings and contribute to a cleaner environment.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Mazhar Asif, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, underlined the significance of cleanliness as a cornerstone of national development and individual well-being. “A clean environment fosters better learning and healthier living. Jamia is proud to contribute to the national mission of Swachh Bharat,” he stated. The Hon’ble Registrar, Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi resonated these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in sustaining cleanliness and promoting green initiatives within the campus and beyond.
Dean Students’ Welfare, Prof. Neelofer Afzal, highlighted the role of students as ambassadors of change, urging them to lead by example in their communities. She said, “Efforts toward cleanliness should persist year-round to ensure a sustainable and pristine campus atmosphere.” Mr. Syed Abdul Rashid, Chief Security Advisor, JMI reaffirmed the university's commitment to enforcing cleanliness standards and fostering an eco-friendly culture.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Neelofer Afzal, who expressed her gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, NSS Team, DSW Team, staff members, students, Residents of Ajmal Bagh, and also to the Sanitation and Horticulture staff who contribute tirelessly to keep Jamia clean.
