Indian Railways has further strengthened affordable travel for the common passenger by achieving record production of modern General and non-AC coaches. Along with improved stations, reasonable ticket fares, and the operation of 30 Amrit Bharat train services, passenger comfort and safety have been significantly enhanced.
With a special focus on the needs of ordinary passengers, Indian Railways is modernising its infrastructure and services with the objective of making rail travel more convenient, comfortable, safe, and affordable. Through continuous investment, operational reforms, and adoption of technology, Indian Railways is reinforcing a passenger-first approach.
Record Production of Modern General Coaches to Enhance Affordable Passenger Capacity
To meet rising demand at affordable fares, Indian Railways has undertaken record production of General and non-AC coaches equipped with modern, passenger-friendly amenities. These coaches not only improve travel comfort but also significantly increase passenger capacity, reinforcing Indian Railways’ commitment to inclusive and accessible rail travel.
Building on this foundation, Indian Railways has launched a sustained coach production programme for the current and upcoming financial years to further strengthen and modernise its passenger fleet.
FY 2025–26 (currently in the final quarter):
Provision for 4,838 new LHB General and Non-AC coaches
LS Coaches: 2,817
LSCN Coaches: 2,021
FY 2026–27:
Production target of 4,802 LHB coaches
LS Coaches: 2,638
LSCN Coaches: 2,164
This planned production aims to meet growing passenger demand while simultaneously improving safety, comfort, and overall service quality.
Unprecedented Special Train Operations to Manage Festive and Seasonal Rush
To manage heavy passenger movement during festive and seasonal peaks, Indian Railways significantly expanded special train operations in 2025. A record 43,000+ special trains were operated, including:
Mahakumbh: 17,340 trains
Holi: 1,144 trains
Summer special trains: 12,417
Chhath Puja: 12,383 trains
These large-scale operations helped reduce congestion, ensure smooth passenger movement, and provide timely connectivity during periods of extremely high demand.
Development of Passenger Waiting Areas at Major Stations
To improve crowd management and pre-boarding convenience, passenger waiting areas are being developed at key stations.
Following the successful implementation of a passenger facility centre at New Delhi Railway Station, Indian Railways has identified 76 stations nationwide for similar developments. The New Delhi waiting area, completed within four months, can accommodate around 7,000 passengers and is equipped with toilets, ticket booking facilities, automatic ticket vending machines, and free RO drinking water.
These new waiting areas will follow modular designs suited to local conditions and are targeted for completion before the 2026 festive season.
