Kochi, March 29, 2026 — The Indian Navy successfully hosted the IONS Maritime Exercise (IMEX) Tabletop Exercise (TTX) 2026 at the Maritime Warfare Centre under the Southern Naval Command in Kochi on March 27. The high-level exercise brought together senior representatives from member navies of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), along with international officers from IOS Sagar and Indian Navy officials.
The exercise focused on addressing emerging non-traditional maritime security challenges in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), a strategically critical zone for global trade, energy flows, and connectivity.
Broad Multinational Participation
Naval representatives from Bangladesh, France, Indonesia, Kenya, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Timor-Leste participated in the exercise. The wide participation underscored a shared commitment to enhancing trust, coordination, and collective maritime security across the region.
Notably, India has assumed the chairmanship of IONS for the 2026–2028 term after a gap of 16 years, marking IMEX TTX 2026 as a significant milestone in regional maritime leadership.
Focus on Coordination & Real-World Challenges
Conducted in a simulated, high-tech environment, the exercise enabled participants to deliberate on complex maritime contingencies without real-world deployment constraints. Key objectives included:
- Enhancing shared understanding of operational procedures and challenges
- Strengthening coordination mechanisms such as information sharing and decision-making processes
- Validating maritime security guidelines through practical scenarios
Strengthening Regional Maritime Framework
By simulating multi-scenario contingencies, the exercise facilitated deeper professional exchanges and reinforced mutual trust among participating nations. It also reaffirmed the role of IONS as a vital platform for collaborative dialogue and regional problem-solving.
