New Delhi, April 3, 2026:
In a major push to strengthen port-led infrastructure, the Centre has approved a ₹132.51 crore Road Over Bridge (ROB) project at LC-235 inside Deendayal Port Authority, Kandla, aimed at improving cargo evacuation and reducing congestion at one of India’s busiest maritime gateways.
The project was approved by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal as part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise logistics under the Sagarmala Programme and the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. The bridge is being executed by Western Railway on a deposit basis and is expected to remove a key operational bottleneck at the port.
Calling it a decisive infrastructure intervention, Sonowal said the ROB would significantly improve multimodal connectivity, streamline cargo movement, and enhance logistics efficiency. He added that the project aligns with the government’s vision of building world-class port infrastructure that supports faster trade flows, greater safety, and India’s emergence as a global maritime hub.
The bridge is particularly significant for Deendayal Port Authority, which has been handling record cargo volumes and recently emerged among the fastest major ports in India to cross major throughput milestones. By easing rail-road crossing congestion inside the port zone, the project is expected to improve turnaround time for cargo vehicles and reduce delays in hinterland connectivity.
