Delhi Gets New Chief Minister: Rekha Gupta Takes Charge
Following a decisive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Shalimar Bagh MLA Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. This marks the BJP’s return to the capital’s top post after more than two decades, with the last BJP Chief Minister being Sushma Swaraj in 1998.
Rekha Gupta becomes Delhi’s fourth female Chief Minister, following Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Sheila Dikshit (Congress), and Atishi (AAP). A first-time MLA, she is also the only female Chief Minister among BJP-led NDA governments across 18 states.
Currently, the only other female Chief Minister in India is Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal.
Gupta’s selection was finalized after a meeting of the BJP’s Parliamentary Board, where senior leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and Om Prakash Dhankar were appointed as observers to oversee the process. The newly elected 48 BJP MLAs gathered to elect their leader, paving the way for Rekha Gupta to take charge as Delhi’s Chief Minister.
