The Union Cabinet’s approval for the 4-lane access-controlled NH-927 corridor between Barabanki and Bahraich is set to become a major catalyst for cross-border trade with Nepal, particularly through the strategically vital Rupaidiha–Nepalgunj land port route. The ₹6,969.04-crore, 101.5-km project is expected to significantly improve logistics efficiency and regional economic integration.
India remains Nepal’s largest trading partner, accounting for over 60% of its total trade, making improved road connectivity on this route economically significant for both countries.
Faster trade movement, stronger supply chains
The new NH-927 corridor will sharply improve access to Rupaidiha Land Port, one of the most active gateways for exports from India to Nepal. A large share of food grains, vegetables, dairy products, consumer goods, medicines and industrial supplies currently moves through this border point.
With the project expected to cut travel time by nearly 50%—from around 150 minutes to 75 minutes—and double average speed from 40 kmph to 80 kmph, the movement of goods is likely to become faster, safer and more cost-efficient.
This will be particularly beneficial for perishable agricultural products such as:
- Rice and wheat
- Fresh vegetables
- Milk and dairy products
- Animal feed
Reduced transit time will lower spoilage losses and directly support farmers, traders and transporters on both sides of the border.
Major boost for eastern UP farmers
The upgraded highway will also provide farmers in eastern Uttar Pradesh districts including Barabanki, Bahraich, Gonda, Balrampur and Shravasti with smoother access to Nepal’s large consumer markets.
This improved market linkage is expected to:
- Increase farmgate realisations
- Reduce post-harvest losses
- Improve export competitiveness
- Expand demand for agri-produce and dairy
Logistics and warehousing opportunities
A better road network is likely to accelerate the development of:
- Warehousing hubs
- Cold storage chains
- Truck terminals
- Freight aggregation centres
- Hospitality and roadside services
The Rupaidiha logistics ecosystem is expected to witness strong growth as daily truck movement rises over the coming years.
