The ‘Har Ghar Surakshit Report 2020: Safety Insights from India’s Police Force’ by Godrej Locks,a business of Godrej & Boyce, the flagship company of the Godrej Group, reveals that 68% cops in North India anticipate, home robberies to increase post complete lifting of the lockdown in the region. This includes cities like Delhi, Jaipur and Lucknow. The report further suggests that 44% cops believe that independent homes in the North region are most vulnerable during mid-night and also residential segments are at a higher perceived risk than the commercial segment. There has been a growing concern about thefts in the recent times, the increase in unemployment rate and the adverse economic impact of the pandemic have pushed people to take to unlawful means of earning. This research was conducted by InQognito Insights and released as part of Har Ghar Surakshit, a nationwide public awareness initiative by Godrej Locks to make citizens home safety conscious.
The report shares a holistic picture of crime levels post COVID-19 across regions in the country. It further states that 77% cops believe that people in the north region do not take enough home safety solutions on a regular basis making them prone to home break-ins. Moreover, 90% cops also agree citizens start taking home safety seriously only after they experience a threat. Cops are already witnessing a rise in petty thefts, vehicle thefts, and commercial break-ins. An alarming 81% cops have observed that people rely on neighbours, househelps and watchmen for their safety. This is testimony to the fact that citizens are dependent on others for their safety instead of taking proactive measures to take charge of their home safety.
The survey further highlights the people’s lackadaisical attitude towards protecting their homes. While 43% cops think locks (branded mechanical/digital locks) are most critical for home safety, there is a paradox when it comes to adoption as security cameras are considered more important in the region. 85% cops feel an urgent need to raise public awareness around home safety technology solutions.
Commenting on the research report, Shyam Motwani, Executive Vice-President and Business Head, Godrej Locks, said, “The Har Ghar Surakshit report is an attempt from Godrej Locks to represent a true picture of the home safety quotient across India, coming right from our trusted safety custodians – the police. A few key findings for the north region that have surfaced are, 76% women and 74% children in North are vulnerable to home break-ins. This research was conducted to help citizens understand the vulnerability of their homes and urge them to take responsibility of their own safety. We hope that these insights from the North region will help citizens raise their home safety quotient and adopt home safety technology solutions.”
As part of the Har Ghar Surakshit Report 2020, Godrej Locks surveyed police officers from across India. It captured their views around home safety observed by citizens and the COVID-19 impact on crime levels. The report has further highlighted the vulnerability of Indian homes, showing that independent homes and private apartments are more prone to robberies. However, most people do not change or upgrade their locking systems of their homes.
