New Delhi, March 27, 2026: Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti has assumed charge as Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes with effect from March 18, 2026, while Kiran Umesh Mahale has taken over as a member of the commission from March 20, 2026.
A former Member of Parliament, Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti has previously served as Minister of State in key ministries including Rural Development and Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. She has been actively involved in social and community development initiatives, particularly focusing on the upliftment of weaker and marginalized sections of society. Her administrative experience is expected to strengthen the commission’s mandate and functioning.
Kiran Umesh Mahale brings extensive experience in grassroots governance and public service. A former Mayor of Amravati Municipal Corporation, she has been associated with multiple social and cooperative initiatives, with a strong focus on women empowerment and welfare-oriented programs.
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment welcomed both appointments, expressing confidence that their leadership and experience will further reinforce the commission’s role in promoting the welfare, protection, and socio-economic development of backward classes across the country.
