P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre unveiled a powerful symbol of unity this World Cancer Day—the 'Tree of Hope' installation at Palladium Mall, Mumbai. Embracing the global theme 'United by Unique,' this initiative aimed to transform individual cancer journeys into a collective message of strength and solidarity.
Located in Palladium Mall's central atrium, the Tree of Hope installation allowed visitors to participate by hanging coloured ribbons representing different cancer types. Each ribbon symbolised personal experiences with cancer—whether as patients, family members, or supporters. The colour-coded ribbons included pink for breast cancer, lavender for all cancers, white for lung cancer, and dark blue for colon cancer, among others. This collaborative display reinforced the World Cancer Day message of community support and shared experiences in cancer care.
The initiative came at a crucial time, as cancer cases in India continue to see a dramatic rise. In 2020 alone the country reported 1.39 million cancer cases, which increased to 1.42 million in 2021 and 1.46 million in 2022. Projections suggest a 12.8% rise by 2025, reaching an estimated 1.57 million cases[1]. Alongside this, cancer-related deaths continue to increase, with many patients living with disabilities or restricted lifestyles. There is an urgent need for heightened awareness about cancer causes and the critical importance of early diagnosis to address these rising numbers and improve outcomes.
Mr. Gautam Khanna, CEO, P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Mahim, said, "For over three decades, as a pioneer in India's cancer care, we've witnessed firsthand how cancer touches countless lives in our community. Our Tree of Hope initiative aimed to create not just awareness, but a movement of solidarity and support. Through this powerful symbol, we want to remind everyone that while cancer journeys are unique, no one needs to face this challenge alone. We're not just treating cancer; we're fostering a supportive ecosystem through education, early detection, and community engagement. Our mission extends beyond medical care—we're building a community where awareness leads to early detection, where support is readily available, and where hope flourishes. This installation represented our commitment to creating a ripple effect of awareness and support that touches lives across Mumbai and beyond."
The Tree of Hope installation featured a unique QR code connecting visitors to an interactive microsite with comprehensive resources for cancer awareness and wellness. The platform offered visitors access to expert-curated content from P. D. Hinduja Hospital's leading oncologists, including detailed information about different types of cancers, early warning signs, prevention strategies, and lifestyle modifications. The digital platform extended the installation's impact beyond the physical space, enabling continuous access to valuable cancer care resources and expert guidance.
Mr. Joy Chakraborty, COO, P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Mahim, shares, "When we say, 'United by Unique,' we embrace a profound truth: while each cancer journey writes its own story, the path to healing is one we walk together. The Tree of Hope stands as a powerful reminder that early detection and unwavering community support can fundamentally transform outcomes. Research shows that early detection can dramatically increase survival rates—by up to 90% for certain cancers. Yet, in India, nearly half of all cancer cases are diagnosed in advanced stages, when treatment becomes more challenging. Through this initiative, we're addressing both the scientific and human elements of cancer care. We've witnessed how a strong support system not only provides emotional strength but tangibly improves treatment outcomes. When patients feel understood and supported, they're better equipped to face their journey with resilience and hope."
Dr. Asha Kapadia, Medical Oncologist & Head of the Department of Medicine, P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Mahim, shares, “Healing extends far beyond the walls of a hospital room. While science and medicine equip us with powerful tools to fight cancer, it is the courage of patients that inspires us daily. The data is clear—India is projected to face 1.57 million cancer cases by 2025. Yet, behind every statistic is a story of resilience. We have witnessed patients transform their diagnosis from a moment of fear into a catalyst for extraordinary strength. This unwavering spirit drives our commitment to advance treatment, early detection, and comprehensive care. Cancer is a formidable opponent, but the human capacity for hope and healing knows no bounds.”
Beyond World Cancer Day, the Tree of Hope installation exemplified P. D. Hinduja Hospital's ongoing commitment to cancer awareness and prevention. It stood as a testament to Mumbai's spirit of unity and the power of community in facing life's greatest challenges.
