New Cancer research findings by JMI group

JMI Research Group has come up with new research findings in the domain of Cancer. These research findings have been published in the current issue (March 2021) of ‘Frontiers in Oncology’, a renowned International Journal in the field of cancer.Colorectal cancer is fifth most common cancer in India and has posed a serious concern owing to its increasing occurrence calling for an early detection and treatment.

The research group led by Prof. Mohammad Husain from Department of Biotechnology, JMI has demonstrated that some colorectal cancer cells have smaller mitochondria, which confers a metabolic advantage of fermenting more glucose to lactate- a phenomenon known as Warburg effect, a characteristic property of more invasive and undruggable cancers.

According to Dr Husain, this finding has opened new ways to look into the role of mitochondrial form-function dynamics in Cancer, thereby to design and develop newer therapeutic targets to better manage the disease. He also said the next step should be “to look into the relevance of these findings for translational benefits in cancer patients.
