A 10-year-old boy, who fell into a 140-foot-deep borewell in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh, tragically lost his life despite a 16-hour rescue operation by NDRF and SDRF teams. The child was rescued on Sunday morning but was declared dead after being rushed to the hospital.
Incident Overview
The boy, identified as Sumit Meena, fell into the borewell on Saturday evening around 5 PM in Pipalya village, located approximately 50 kilometers from Guna district headquarters. The village is part of the Raghogarh assembly constituency. He was trapped at a depth of about 39 feet inside the borewell, which was uncovered as it lacked water.
Rescue Operation
Authorities launched a massive rescue operation with the assistance of local villagers and teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). The operation lasted through the night in freezing weather, and Sumit was finally pulled out at around 9:30 AM on Sunday. However, he showed no signs of life when rescued.
Medical Response
Sumit was placed on life support and rushed to a hospital in Raghogarh. Guna's Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr. Rajkumar Rishishwar, confirmed the tragic news, stating, “It is with great regret that we announce the boy is no longer alive.”
Condition of the Boy
Dr. Rishishwar explained that Sumit had been exposed to extreme cold for hours. His limbs were swollen, his clothes were wet, and his mouth was filled with mud. Doctors suspected hypothermia—a condition caused when the body’s temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit—had severely affected his vital organs.
Administrative Response
Guna District Collector Satendra Singh said that the borewell was left uncovered because it did not contain water, leading to the tragic accident. The family of the boy raised the alarm after they noticed his prolonged absence. A local villager eventually discovered him trapped in the borewell, prompting the rescue efforts.
The tragic loss has raised concerns about the safety of uncovered borewells in rural areas and the need for stricter measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
