Indian Railways has significantly strengthened passenger convenience and safety, rolling out free Wi-Fi at 6,117 railway stations and expanding CCTV surveillance across stations and coaches, the government informed Parliament on Wednesday.
Free Wi-Fi at 6,117 Stations, No Extra Cost to Exchequer
Passengers can now access complimentary internet services at thousands of railway stations across the country. Notably, no separate budgetary allocation has been made for these Wi-Fi services, underscoring a cost-efficient digital push by the Railways.
To connect, users are required to share only their mobile number for OTP verification—no additional personal details are sought. Railway authorities have also put systems in place to address connectivity issues promptly, ensuring smoother access for travellers.
CCTV Coverage Strengthened for Safer Journeys
In parallel, Indian Railways continues to scale up surveillance infrastructure. So far, CCTV cameras have been installed at 1,731 stations and inside 11,953 coaches, enhancing real-time monitoring and passenger security. The expenditure on this surveillance network is being met through capital expenditure provisions.
New Delhi Railway Station Gets Enhanced Surveillance
Security has been further tightened at New Delhi Railway Station, one of the busiest transit hubs in the country. While CCTV cameras were already in place across key areas—such as entry and exit points, foot overbridges, platforms, waiting halls, and ticket counters—additional cameras have been installed after February 15, 2025 to cover newly identified zones.
