New Delhi/Dubai: Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot of flydubai Flight FZ1073, is in stable condition after sustaining injuries during an onboard security incident that forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, according to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh.
The Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8, transmitted emergency squawk codes shortly after departing Dubai International Airport before diverting to Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft first transmitted code 7700, indicating a general emergency, before switching to code 7500, which is associated with unlawful interference on board. Authorities have cautioned that the signal alone does not establish what transpired during the flight. About 180 passengers were on board.
The Indian Embassy said Captain Machchhar is receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Tabuk and that Indian officials are closely monitoring his condition while remaining in contact with his family. Initial reports indicate he is stable.
The incident has drawn widespread reactions from political leaders and aviation stakeholders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Captain Machchhar's courage and presence of mind, while President Droupadi Murmu, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and several international representatives also commended his actions.
Flydubai has suspended flights to and from Israel pending the outcome of an investigation. The airline said the temporary suspension was taken in coordination with relevant authorities and would remain in place while officials establish the facts surrounding the incident.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the flight are continuing.
