Companies such as Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia and ZTE demonstrated several exhilarating 5G use case scenarios at India Mobile Congress 2019, the biggest and most significant telecom, Internet, and technology mega event in South Asia.
The three-day long event, themed “Imagine a new connected world: Intelligent, Immersive and Inventive” also deep dived into concepts such as smart spaces, augmented analytics, autonomous things, m-Health, logistics of the future, inventive start-ups, intelligent edge and the immersive world. Further, there were discussions around emerging technologies such as AI, AR, VR and IoT, new digital ecosystems, m-education, m-health and retail, agri-tech, robotics, enterprise software, logistics, cybersecurity, cyborgs, etc. Veterans and experts from around the world shared their views, opinions, and ideas on the ongoing trends and future outlook for the ICT and TMT sectors.
In line with this year’s key focus area – 5G, many global telecom and IT companies conducted 5G demonstrations at the event.
Ericsson, the Swedish multinational networking and Telecommunications Company, which was also one of the Technology Partners for India Mobile Congress 2019, demonstrated Remote Music Performance as a unique 5G use case. This demo showcased a solution that enables musicians to play together in real-time, from two or more remote locations over a live 5G link. This is an example of a consumer business case where service providers can become a part of the value chain and tap into new revenue streams by charging for guaranteed quality of service (QoS) rather than over-the-top (OTT) data. This promises ultra-reliable, high-performance networks, with extremely low latency, enabling real-time remote collaboration in more application areas and over greater geographical distances than hitherto thought to be possible.
Similarly, Huawei, a global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices and a leader in 5G tech, also showcased several demos in collaboration with telecom service providers, such as the safe city use cases scenario, based on 5G, Smart boarding gates at airport, enabled by facial recognition technology, a completely paperless procedure for authentication. It also showcased academia solutions such as VR based modes of teaching and smart classrooms, remote interactive teaching and resource sharing, among others. Cloud based VR Gaming was also showcased where the entire gaming infrastructure was hosted on the cloud and a device for access was made available to the gamer present on the spot.
Nokia, an innovative global leader in 5G, networks, and phones, in collaboration with various TSPs also showcased several innovative 5G use case scenarios which included virtual shopping experience of the future, Virtual Entertainment pivoted on 5G LIVE link for Karaoke performances (allowing users to sing their favourite karaoke in a virtual scenario of their choice through a 3D avatar), immersive and engaging gaming experience hoisted on 5G link. Other solutions such as Interactive healthcare solution for remote surgery and remote training for medical professionals were also showcased. Through ultra-reliable and low latency 5G networks, it is possible for doctors to remotely control machines and devices and that too, in real time. Remote consultation by doctors will pretty much be within the realms of possibility, once 5G gets implemented commercially.
Several other solutions such as Smart Agriculture where technology can help farmers in augmenting their yield through better crop, soil, water management, Virtual e-learning solution with 5G classroom – where access to education can be improved by e-connecting students with world-class educationists, were also showcased at the event. 5G can truly usher in socio-economic inclusivity and democratisation of technology and services.
ZTE, a multinational telecommunications equipment and Systems Company, also demonstrated several interesting 5G use cases like a low latency remotely controlled robot, high-speed internet access using enhanced mobile broadband, low latency virtual reality-based gaming and IoT applications for efficient/smart water management.
The IMC 2019 conference and exhibition was hosted over a total area of more than 50,000 square-meters, with over 250-plus global industry experts and speakers, 5,000 CXO-level delegates, 150 national and international buyers as well as sellers, 800 media, 75,000 visitors and 300 exhibitors. Delegations from countries around the world participated in the event, which also witnessed more than 250 indigenous companies, showcasing their latest and best technologies, products, services, and applications.
