Ferozepur, an Aspirational district in Punjab, has launched a district-led initiative 'Janam Shakti' to combat its high maternal mortality rate, showcasing a commendable turnaround in maternal health outcomes. This comprehensive maternal health intervention aims to strengthen healthcare delivery systems and reduce preventable maternal deaths.
Key Achievement Highlights:
Maternal Deaths Drastically Reduced
Maternal deaths in Ferozepur have dropped from 2-3 per month to 0-1 in the past five months as a result of the district’s efforts, marking a promising turnaround.
Home Deliveries Slashed
Home deliveries dramatically decreased from 308 in 2023-24 to just 4 in 2024-25 and further to 1 in 2025-26 (until June 2025), owing to awareness drives about free transport and delivery services under JSY and JSSK.
Maternal Death Review Meetings Revived
After a two-year hiatus, maternal death review meetings have been reinstated. Each maternal death is now thoroughly analysed with frontline workers and doctors to understand causes and identify preventable lapses.
High-Risk Pregnancies Tracked
Ferozepur ensured the tracking and close monitoring of High-Risk Pregnancies (HRPs) by Medical Officers and the Civil Surgeon's office. A dedicated WhatsApp group, "MCH Ferozepur," facilitates real-time coordination when HRPs are referred.
Data Review Mechanism Strengthened
RCH registers are now reviewed for accuracy and completeness and sub-centers are instructed to line-list ANC-1 and ANC-4 cases to identify gaps.
PMSMA Camps Boosted
Specialist camps under Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) were organised across blocks to improve early complication detection.
The district administration's co-ordinated efforts are working to transform maternal health in Ferozepur, setting a powerful example of grassroots governance and commitment to saving lives.
