Legendary actor Dharmendra, affectionately called “He-Man” of Indian cinema and “Dharam Paaji” by millions, passed away today at his Juhu residence in Mumbai. He was 89.
The actor had been battling age-related health complications for over a month and was briefly admitted to Breach Candy Hospital earlier this month due to respiratory issues. He chose to spend his final days at home surrounded by family.
The news has left the nation in mourning, with tributes pouring in from fans, co-stars, and the entire film industry for one of Hindi cinema’s most beloved and enduring superstars.
Born Dharam Singh Deol on December 8, 1935, in Punjab, Dharmendra made his acting debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. Over a glorious career spanning more than six decades and over 300 films, he established himself as a rare actor who effortlessly excelled in action, romance, comedy, and drama.
His towering screen presence, earthy charm, and natural acting made him a favourite across generations. He delivered unforgettable performances in timeless classics such as Sholay (as the iconic Veeru), Phool Aur Patthar, Seeta Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, Dharam Veer, Pratiggya, and many more.
Honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 and the Padma Bhushan in 2012, Dharmendra remained active in cinema well into his late 80s. He won hearts in recent years with memorable roles in Yamla Pagla Deewana series, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024), where he played Shahid Kapoor’s grandfather.
His final film, Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan and co-starring Agastya Nanda, is slated for release next year and will mark his last on-screen appearance.
Dharmendra is survived by his wife, legendary actress Hema Malini, sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, daughters Vijeta and Ajeita, and grandchildren, including Karan Deol and Rajveer Deol.
As the sun sets on an extraordinary era of Indian cinema, Dharam Paaji’s legacy as the original action hero, romantic icon, and the warm-hearted “garam Dharam” will live forever in the hearts of millions.
Rest in glory, He-Man.
