18th RC in Geography & Environmental Studies, JMI- Report of Day 3 (11 November 2020): Enlightening lecture delivered by Dr. Steffen Fritz (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Vienna, Austria); Prof. Shahab Fazal (Department of Geography, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh); Prof. Milap C. Punia (Center for the Study of Regional Development, JNU, New Delhi); Prof. Gauhar Mehmood (Department of Civil Engineering, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi). Dr. Fritz called upon engaging Citizen participatory science to leverage public engagements for health promoting and environment-friendly behaviours.
He also greater need for spatially explicit techniques to increase targeting and efficiency of public policies for better SDG monitoring. Prof. Fazal highlighted the interrelationship between land use transformation and SDGs at different spatial scales, with particular focus on the agricultural activities, livelihood opportunities and efficacy of remote sensing/geographical information systems for monitoring efficient resource utilization.
Prof. Punia underscored the Himalayan Cryosphere assessment with a focus on its evolution over time, anthropogenic impacts, and consequences of glacial topography for the sustainability of mountain ecology and human life. Prof. Mehmood emphasized upon the increasing pressure of urbanization, changing land-use patterns and its effect on water resources.
